Description: Kalimba is an upgraded version of the ancient African mbira, which is also often referred to as the thumb piano. It has a simple, melodic percussion-string sound with a tonal telo, reminiscent of marimba. It is often used in conjunction with piano and other percussion instruments to add sharper attack and playfulness to the sound. Our instruments were made of wood and coconut shells, with clogged steel teeth suspended above their sound holes. The notes cover about an octave and a half for the smaller of our two instruments and more than two octaves for the larger kalimba.
We recorded kalimbas in three different environments: Close and Dry in our studio; at an average distance in a small chamber; and in a large, long linear hall, both at close (1 meter) and at a distant (15 meters) microphone distance. We call our long hall "Bunker" because that's exactly what it really is – deep underground an artillery bunker from World War I. This is one of our favorite secret places that has been used for some parts of the Rust 2 library and some other instruments in our collection. The dry recording was done by a stereo pair of capacitors with a large aperture at a distance of 2 inches in a very dry place. You will hear a small crackle and creak of wood. We think these elements help give instruments a more natural sound and feel.
This library comes with an adaptable LFO system with a selectable LFO shape, modulation target, speed, intensity, pace synchronization, and rise time. You can also apply 12 low-pass, high-pass and FX filters of your choice with assignable modulation targets such as bicycle city, modulation wheel, expression, after-touch, key position and step-by-step sequencer table control. Our customizable arpeggiator offers a bike city table and direction, timing, swing, randomization and arpeggio duration management. We have enabled a system of blocking tonality and scale to limit your notes to certain scales and tonalities to make it easier to melodic composition or live performance.
The interface is complemented by our modular FX rack panel with 18 different DSP effect modules, which you can assign to any of the 10 available slots in any order. You will find a classic fairer, flanger, delay, distortion, amplifier and cabinet simulators, compressors, equalizer, rotator and much more. The reverberation effect incorporates our favorite convolutional pulses, including 99 different rooms, halls, cameras and outdoor environments, as well as another 40 customizable FX pulses to radically transform sound and open up entirely new worlds of musical possibilities. To get started, we've added a great bank of factory presets for the FX chain!
